The Louisville athletic department announced Thursday that former Madison West basketball star Reece Gaines will be one their newest inductees into the prestigious University of Louisville Athletics Hall of Fame.

The 6’6″ Gaines was a star at Madison West before playing four years at University of Louisville. A starter for all four seasons (1999-2003), Gaines earned AP All-America 3rd team honors his senior season while leading the Cardinals to a 25-7 win-loss record. Gaines also earned second-team All-America honors by The Sporting News, ESPN.com, and Sports Illustrated as a senior. He’s considered one of the best all-time shooting guards for the Louisville Cardinal basketball program and ranks fourth in Louisville men’s basketball history in scoring and seventh in assists.

Gaines was the 15th selection overall by the Orlando Magic in the 2003 NBA Draft first round and played three seasons in the NBA with the Orlando Magic, Houston Rockets and Milwaukee Bucks. He is currently an assistant men’s basketball coach for Eastern Kentucky University.

The Louisville athletic department also announced four other inductees into the University of Louisville Athletics Hall of Fame on Thursday including Jessica Javelet (field hockey), Keola Calderon (softball), Sharon Bellamy Richardson (women’s basketball) and Adrian Cann (men’s soccer).

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to welcome back and honor these five terrific individuals who are legends in each of their respective U of L sports programs,” said Louisville Interim Director of Athletics Vince Tyra. “All five have made lasting contributions to Cardinal Athletics that now culminate in their induction to this prestigious hall of fame.”

The school has scheduled an induction ceremony for Feb. 2 inside Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.
