The 31st annual Virginia and Perry Henderson Back to School Celebration, hosted by the 100 Black Men of Madison, will be held Saturday, Aug. 15, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Madison College Truax Campus. The annual event is a great opportunity for Dane County students and families to prepare for the new school year.
Formerly called “Backpacks for Success,” the 100 Black Men of Madison renamed one of its signature events last year in honor of Dr. Perry Henderson and Dr. Virginia Henderson, who were instrumental in starting the event.
Dr. Perry Henderson, a retired obstetrician, philanthropist, community leader and member of the 100 Black Men of Madison, passed away on July 10, 2025. He was married to his wife, Dr. Virginia Henderson, for more than 60 years. Virginia Henderson was a beloved and legendary educator and matriarch to many in the Madison community. She died six years ago.
In 2020, Glendale Elementary School on Madison’s East Side was renamed in her honor.
All Dane County elementary, middle and high school students and their parents are invited to participate in the Back to School Celebration.
The annual event has evolved over the years but has always centered on providing school supplies to thousands of local students while connecting young people and their parents with resources they need to succeed.
Students can receive a free backpack, one per student, while supplies last. Families must attend together, and students must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Madison College’s Truax Campus is located at 1750 Wright St., Madison.
