Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers announced Thursday he won’t run for re-election next year.
Evers said in a video posted on the social media platform X that the “only thing he loves more than being your governor is being a husband, a dad, and a grandpa.”
“For five decades, my family has sacrificed to give me the gift of service. They’re my world, and I owe it to them to focus on doing all the things we enjoy and love doing together,” he said. “It’s why, Wisconsin, I’m announcing that I will not be running for a third term. I’m humbled to be your governor. This is the best job I ever had.”
Evers was first elected governor in 2018, defeating incumbent Republican Scott Walker. He was successfully reelected in 2022, defeating challenger Tim Michels.
Several Democrats have expressed interest in running to succeed Evers, including state Attorney General Josh Kaul, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson, Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez, Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski, and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley.
On the Republican side, Bill Berrien, a Milwaukee manufacturing CEO, and Josh Schoemann, the county executive of Washington County, have launched campaigns so far.
