Green Bay School District begins new superintendent search after Superintendent Dr. Claude Tiller resigns

The Green Bay Area School District is looking for a new superintendent after the school board accepted Superintendent Dr. Claude Tiller Jr.’s resignation about 7 months into his position.

With a unanimous vote of 7 to 0, the board accepted Tiller’s resignation Saturday after he was put on paid leave last week following an investigation into comments he made to an Atlanta radio show host. Tiller was in Atlanta recruiting teachers from historically Black colleges and universities.

In a letter issued to the community Saturday night, Tiller said “I spoke my truth.”

“In a recent media engagement while on a recruitment initiative in Atlanta, I had the opportunity to participate in a broadcast discussion on the complex challenges facing public education. The conversation spanned issues of equity and the significant achievement disparities persisting in many school districts. Issues that can only be addressed through having uncomfortable conversations, and requires an introspective analysis of our identity and ethos as a school district. I provided my perspectives with candor, anchoring my narrative in both my professional insights and personal experiences as an educational leader of color. Simply put, I spoke my truth.”

District officials have received a copy of the video of the show and will be releasing it on Wednesday.

The Green Bay Area School District is on its fifth superintendent in as many years.
