Dane County’s Henry Vilas Zoo is now accepting scholarship applications to cover the costs associated with Zoo Camps and other education programs. Scholarship applications are available for either full or partial program costs.

“Costs should never be a barrier to education,” said Zoo Director Ronda Schwetz in a press release. “Our education programs reached over 10,000 people in 2023 and we are committed to expanding even more in 2024.”

Henry Vilas Zoo, a free-admission zoo, is dedicated to exceptional animal care, conserving wildlife and educating the community about the natural world. The Henry Vilas Zoo’s scholarship program was created in 2020 and the zoo has raised over $87,000 to date.

Camp programs at the zoo feature experiences for elementary and middle-school-aged children between the ages of 4 and 13, according to a press release from Henry Vilas Zoo, and participants get to meet zoo animals, see behind-the-scenes areas of the zoo and hear from the zoo’s knowledgeable zookeeper staff. Program options include both weeklong camps and individual day mini-camps.

“We are committed to building upon the successes of our education programs,” said Conservation and Education Curator Jess Thompson in a statement. “With our anchors of promoting empathy towards wildlife and removing barriers to conservation action, we are excited to expand our scholarship options.”
