Sen. Kamala Harris

Speaking at a town hall meeting in New Hampshire, 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris told the crowd that she would support a federal law to change Columbus Day to “Indigenous Peoples Day.”

“Sign me up,” Harris said, per BuzzFeed News, answering a voter’s question of whether she would support the initiative to rename the holiday. Harris then spoke of her own efforts in the Senate to make lynching a federal crime.

Every year, more cities, states and universities across the nation choose to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day as an alternative to Columbus Day. So far, a total of 56 cities and four states have followed suit.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has proposed taking Columbus Day off the federal holiday list and replacing it with Election Day.
