Madison College will celebrate Hmong heritage, family, and tradition at its annual Hmong New Year Celebration on Saturday, Dec. 6. from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Truax Campus Cafeteria Atrium, Room D1630, and Redsten Gymnasium.

Guests will experience a vibrant day of Hmong music, dance, food, art and community, featuring local food vendors, an arts and crafts marketplace, children’s activity stations, and community resource tables.

“As we celebrate 50 years of the Hmong journey in America, we’re reminded that our stories, traditions, and values continue to strengthen the Hmong community here in Madison and across Wisconsin,” said Masaya Xiong, co-chair of the Madison College Hmong New Year Celebration, in a press release announcing the event. “Education has opened doors, inspired growth, and created new opportunities for Hmong families. Madison College continues to support Hmong students in achieving their goals through learning and skill-building. We invite everyone to join us, bring your friends and family, and celebrate the Hmong New Year with us.”

The free community event holds special meaning as Hmong Americans mark 50 years since the first Hmong families resettled in the United States following the Vietnam War and the Secret War in Laos. Wisconsin, Minnesota, and California have the largest Hmong populations in the country, where communities continue to thrive through strong leadership, family values, traditions, and mutual support that connect generations.

New this year to the Hmong New Year celebration are a singing competition for high school and college students and a cornhole tournament open to amateur players ages 12 and up. Doors open at 10 a.m., with early competitions beginning before the main celebration kicks off at 11 a.m.
