The Madison Metropolitan School District Board of Education today announced that it had selected Dr. Jane Belmore as interim superintendent to lead the district for the 2019-2020 school year following the departure of current superintendent Jennifer Cheatham in August.

“Dr. Belmore is widely respected in education and brings extensive experience in our district,” Board President Gloria Reyes said in a statement. “As a board, we are unified in our commitment to our district’s vision, goals and core values – and the work outlined in our Strategic Framework. We are excited to have Jane lead that work forward, and we are eager to engage with our community through the next school year to select a permanent superintendent.”

Belmore served as a former teacher, principal, and assistant superintendent in MMSD. Schools. This will be her second stint as interim superintendent; she filled the same role in the 2012-13 school year after the departure of former superintendent Dan Nerad.

She received her doctorate in educational administration from the University of Wisconsin Madison. She has also served as a professor and dean of the School of Education at Edgewood College.

“I am honored to be selected for this role, and I am energized to support the district’s staff, students and families this school year,” Belmore said in a statement. “Madison schools have a strong vision and core values in place, and I look forward to working with the board to move this work forward.”

Dr. Belmore’s contract will be finalized at Monday’s board meeting, according to a school district press release.
