Nearly six months after becoming a program of Literacy Network, Omega School
continued its more than 50-year tradition of celebrating students who obtain their GED or High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) with a semiannual graduation ceremony on Saturday, June 21, at Madison College’s Goodman South Campus.
Approximately 150 people, including students and their families and friends, along with Literacy Network staff, came together to celebrate the students’ success.
“It is a distinct honor to build relationships with students as they work toward their goal of high school completion and now be there to celebrate this milestone together,” said Ezi Adesi, the director of Omega School of Literacy Network, who also served as emcee of the event. “I cannot wait to see what they accomplish next.”
The merger between the Literacy Network and Omega School was announced in September 2024 with its long-time director, Oscar Mireles, retiring in 2025 after 30 years. The Literacy Network announced that Adesi would be the new director for Omega School earlier this year.
At Saturday’s graduation event, there were two ceremonies. The first recognized students who completed Literacy Network’s highest level English language class, obtained their GED or HSED after working with a personal Literacy Network tutor, became U.S. citizens, or received a scholarship funded by Altrusa International, Inc. of Madison to pursue higher education. A student and staff speaker introduced each group, followed by a presentation of certificates.
The second ceremony was for students who earned their high school diplomas through the programming at Omega School of Literacy Network. This included a full cap and gown ceremony with both a graduate and alumnus speaker. Each graduate was presented with a certificate and given the opportunity to speak.
