Area homeowners are encouraged to show their support for the work of Centro Hispano of Dane County, a leading non-profit organization working with the Latinx population, at a time of uncertainty and fear for many immigrants in the area. New yard signs in support of Centro Hispano’s mission are popping up around Madison as the non-profit starts a new campaign to showcase its values and highlight community ties.

The campaign called Nuestros Valores, “Our Values” in English, is highlighting the importance of community. Centro Hispano aims to bring people together in “a challenging time of fear, worry and sadness,” said Karen Menéndez Coller, executive director of Centro Hispano, in reflection of political uncertainty that leaves many nervous.

“The totality of who we are as a people and a community won’t be defined by this moment,” Menéndez Coller said. “Whether it’s helping young people and families with their school experience or partnering with local employers on workforce development and job skills, now is a good time to recognize the totality of what it means to be part of a community.”

The three yard signs that are available reflect Centro Hispano’s core values of belonging, community and compassion. Each variant reads either “Centro Means Community,” “Centro Means Belonging” or “Centro Means Compassion.”

“Our signs reflect value statements of who we are as an organization and community and reminders of what together we are capable of every day when we focus on how together we can better the place we call home,” Menéndez Coller said.

Centro Hispano has a more than 40-year history of uplifting and strengthening local communities here in Dane County and now supports over 7,500 individuals annually with more than 20,000 hours of programming.

Homeowners are encouraged to head to Centro Hispano, 2403 Cypress Way, to pick up signs. Yard signs are available to pick up now and are free, but a $20 donation is encouraged.
