Eau Claire County had its first coronavirus death Monday, the only death statewide, bringing the total death toll to 745.

The percentage of coronavirus tests coming back positive today fell slightly to 3.8 percent as 248 new cases were reported Sunday, bringing the statewide total to 25,077. Of those, fewer than 4,800 remain active. As recently as three weeks ago, more than 6,300 cases were considered active.

The largest local increase in new cases today comes from Milwaukee County, with 88 new cases and 6.44 percent of tests coming back positive.

Today’s new cases were spread broadly throughout the state, with only a few additional counties posting double-digit increases:

Dane County: 40 new cases, 6.93 percent positive tests
La Crosse County: 24 new cases, 20.5 percent positive tests
Waukesha County: 12 new cases, 2.9 percent positive tests

Of the 50 new cases confirmed in Dane County, 31 are younger than 40: three are under the age of 10; six are 10-19, 14 are 20-29 and eight are in their thirties.

Dane County has confirmed 70 new cases over the weekend, and 173 cases in the past week. That puts the daily average new case count for the past 14 days at 21.21, above the threshold of 20 that would have prevented the county from moving to phase 2 of the Forward Dane reopening plan, which it did one week ago.

Hospitalizations statewide are up to 246, three more than yesterday but 38 fewer than a week ago. Of those currently hospitalized for COVID-19, 93 require intensive care. Additionally, 169 people are hospitalized and awaiting test results.

The rate of disparity in Latino populations continues to stand out — 32.4 percent of total cases are now Latino people, and 23 percent of today’s new cases. Latinos make up just seven percent of the state’s overall population.

Similarly, 18 percent of all cases are Black people, as are 24 percent of total COVID-19 related deaths in the state. Black people make up just six percent of the state’s population.

DHS also reports that 79 percent of those confirmed to have been infected have recovered and three percent have died.
