Multiple media outlets are reporting Saturday that President Donald Trump is expected to offer temporary protections for Dreamers — young adults brought to the United States unlawfully as children — in exchange for $5.7 billion to fund a border wall in an effort to end the 28-day-long government shutdown.
Trump and Democratic leaders struck a similar deal months ago, but Trump changed his mind.
The Associated Press reported that three people familiar with his thinking confirmed the plans.
It is unclear whether or not Democrats were receptive to the offer, or specifically what the protections would entail. Dreamers were protected from deportation under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, instituted by President Barack Obama and ended by Trump.
