Gloria Reyes Unseats Moffit to Become First Latina on Madison School Board

0

Madison Deputy Mayor Gloria Reyes has unseated one-term incumbent Anna Moffit in Seat One on the Madison Metropolitan School District Board to become the first Latina to serve on the board.

Reyes, a former Madison Police Department detective, has been outspoken about her perception that the Madison school district has not served students of color well. She has also spoken in favor of keeping police in schools, but to keep students safe, not to police the students or respond to social issues.

Reyes won with 53 percent of the vote. Madison School Board member Mary Burke was also elected to a third term in an uncontested race for Seat 2.

Juan Jose Lopez was the first Latino elected to the school board in 1994.
