In previous years, absentee voting lines stretched through the hallways of the City County Building in downtown Madison as voters waited for hours just to cast a single ballot.
Not this year. Absentee voting is now a citywide affair. Early voting in the city of Madison officially kicked off today and voters are able to cast in-person absentee ballots for the first time at all of Madison’s public libraries. The Madison city clerk’s office has trained librarians at all nine public libraries to process absentee votes.
The Madison City Council approved the expanded absentee voting hours and locations in early September. There are three other sites in addition to the nine public libraries where you may cast an absentee ballot including UW-Madison, Edgewood College and the city’s East Side Streets Division.
Republican lawmakers had enacted limits on early and absentee voting that blocked weekend voting and established certain hours and dates for in-person voting. A federal judge threw out many of those laws in July, saying they were unfair to minority and largely Democratic voters.
Here are the in-person absentee voting hours and locations. A person may vote at any of these locations regardless of what district they reside in.
