As the Native American Student Association at Madison College celebrates its 30th year, its signature public event returns after being canceled the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Annual Spring Pow Wow is set for this Saturday at the Redsten Gym on the Madison College Truax Campus on Madison’s east side. The event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 11 am with grand entrances set for 1 and 7 pm.

“It’s a contemporary social gathering and celebration of community, featuring Native drum music and songs, Native dance, Native food as well as local Native artists and vendors showing and selling their art and Native beadwork,” said Madison College Community Engagement Coordinator Nicole Soulier.

Soulier, who is also a member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, said the theme of the event is celebrating achievment.

“As an institution, hosting this event helps with celebrating the achievements of our students and giving our students some representation here at the college feeling like this is a place for them and that we celebrate them for who they are and what they have,” she said.

Organizers hope members of the community who aren’t Indigenous will come to learn.

“As far as non-Native people who may want to come to our event, it’s an excellent opportunity to learn and be exposed to our culture, our way of life, and to also just have a good time building community,” Soulier said.

No tickets or registration are necessary.
