A new soul food restaurant has joined the scene of growing Black-owned restaurants in Madison.

Anointed One Soul Food, located at 515 Junction Road, brings comfort food to the west side of Madison searching up dishes like seafood gumbo and smother fried chicken.

The family-owned restaurant is fashioned after Anointed One BBQ and Soul Food in Sheridan, Colorado. Family members of the Madison restaurant’s spokesperson, Governor House, were friends with the Sheridan restaurant owner and head chef Maurice “Mo” Jones.  Jones was looking to expand and they convinced him to to make Madison their next stop, according to House.

“I feel like there is a lane for soul food here in Madison,” said House, a Madison native. “It gives people a place to come to get good food that will make you feel good.”

The restaurant hosted its grand opening on October 15 featuring a special menu of seafood gumbo, turkey, and fried pork chops.

The restaurant’s full menu features main courses such as fried catfish, fried and smothered chicken, meatloaf, and Chicago style-polish.

Some entrees come with classic comfort side dishes like collard greens, macaroni and cheese, dressing, yellow rice, yams, and pinto beans.

The menu also features desserts such as carrot cake, sweet potato pie and banana pudding.

“We’re focused on creating a clean and comforting environment for everyone,” said House.

Anointed One is open from 11 am to 9 pm Tuesday through Saturday and 11 am to 8 pm on Sunday.
