UW-Madison student Julianna Bennett has defeated fellow student Ayomi Obuseh to become the first Black representative of the campus district on the Madison Common Council.
Bennett earned nearly two-thirds of the vote, leading 317 votes to 162.
“This is just the beginning of our movement,” Bennett said in a statement to voters Tuesday night. “We have a long way to go before we win affordable housing, sustainability, and other important goals that we’ve set during this campaign. I know that with the support of the community, we will continue to make our voices heard.”
Bennett will replace Max Prestigiacomo, who decided not to run for re-election.
