More than one thousand people have tested positive for coronavirus infection in Wisconsin.

The State Department of Health Services reported 989 total cases just before 2 pm Saturday, with 158 cases reported in Dane County and 489 cases in Milwaukee County. However, the Dane and Milwaukee County health departments independently reported 164 and 496, respectively, bringing the total count statewide to 1,002.

At least 17 people have died from complications of COVID19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, according to state and county reports.

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway and Dane County Executive Joe Parisi said Friday that it is urgent that people stay home unless absolutely necessary. In response to an email inquiry, a Public Health Madison & Dane County representative said the county is no longer able to trace all the contacts of every person who tests positive, so everyone should assume they are exposed to the virus any time they leave their homes.
