The City of Milwaukee has agreed today to pay $5.3 million to settle a lawsuit with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Wisconsin over police stop-and-frisk practices where allegations stated that police officers targeted African-American and Latino residents without probable cause.

The Milwaukee Common Council approved a $3.4 million settlement today, which is on top of the $1.9 million in attorney fees associated with the case.

The ACLU of Wisconsin initially sued the department in February of 2017 accusing Milwaukee police officers of routinely stopping thousands of people of color without suspicion or cause. The stops span from October of 2010 through fall of 2016.
