COVID hospitalizations break record again as more than 2,500 new cases confirmed and 9 die

More people are currently hospitalized due to COVID-19 than ever before — 543 — and nine more have died as the effects of the recent spike in coronavirus spread are felt in Wisconsin.

The state confirmed 2,504 new coronavirus cases Friday on just under 15,000 tests, for a positive test rate of 16.6 percent. Those results bring the total case count to 110,828 of which over 17,171 are considered active, about 800 more than Tuesday.

Today is the 21st day of the past 22 that the positive test rate has been over 10 percent.

Wisconsin’s positive test rate for the past seven days is now 17.18 percent, and the 14-day rate is down slightly to 16.76 percent. Today’s data brings the seven-day average of new cases to 1,936 and the 14-day average to 1,787.

Nine new fatalities were reported today — two in Milwaukee County and one each in Calumet, Marinette, Outagamie, Pierce, Taylor, Walworth and Winnegago Counties — bringing the total death toll to 1,274.

Wisconsin has averaged 5.14 deaths per day over the past week and 5.0 per day over the past two weeks.

The highest local new case count came in Brown County, with a 278 new cases and 16.45 percent positive tests.

Dunn County: 23 new cases, 88.46 percent positive tests
Eau Claire County: 42 new cases, 11.76 percent positive tests
Fond du Lac County: 61 new cases, 16.44 percent positive tests
Grant County: 32 new cases, 57.14 percent positive tests
Green Lake County: 13 new cases, 27.08 percent positive tests
Jefferson County: 33 new cases, 18.75 percent positive tests
Juneau County: 10 new cases, 12.99 percent positive tests
Kenosha County: 41 new cases, 8.4 percent positive tests
Kewaunee County: 27 new cases, 25.23 percent positive tests
La Crosse County: 108 new cases, 34.39 percent positive tests
Lafayette County: 12 new cases, 28.57 percent positive tests
Lincoln County: 10 new cases, 71.43 percent positive tests

The number hospitalized with COVID-19 on Tuesday jumped to 543, the most the pandemic began and the third consecutive day over 500. Today’s total is 15 more than Thursday and 201 more than a week ago — meaning the population of those hospitalized with COVID-19 has increased by 68 percent in one week. Of those, 147 were in ICUs, four fewer than Thursday.
