Dane County, American Red Cross to extend shelter, cooling center during heat wave

    The American Red Cross will continue to offer shelter through Tuesday evening at Madison College for those displaced by this week’s severe weather, the County of Dane’s Department of Emergency Management announced Tuesday.

    Additionally, Dane County will re-open the Veterans Memorial Coliseum at the Alliant Energy Center Wednesday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., to serve as a cooling center as extreme heat is forecasted to continue for the next 24 hours. The City of Madison’s temperature reached the mid-90s on Tuesday and is expected to reach the 90s on Wednesday. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory from 11 am Tuesday through 8 pm Wednesday.

    Utility crews continue to work to restore power to those who lost electricity in Monday’s severe storms, according to a press release from Dane County. The area may be impacted by additional severe thunderstorms on Wednesday.
