With thousands of people still without power following Monday’s storms and temperatures forecast into the 90s Tuesday, Dane County Executive Joe Parisi announced on Twitter Monday that the County had partnered with Madison College and the Red Cross to open cooling shelters.

Monday night’s shelter will be hosted by Madison College at its Truax Campus, 1701 Wright Street.

Tuesday, the Dane County Colliseum will be open as a cooling center from 10 am until 5 pm.

“Local utilities are working vigorously to restore power & expect to make progress throughout tomorrow,” Parisi wrote on Twitter, encouraging residents to monitor utility websites for updates.

As of 9:30 pm Monday, a  notice on the Madison Gas and Electric website said the utility could not estimate when power would be restored. The website says about 17,500 customers lost power, and about 2,000 had their power restored as of 4:30 pm.
