In a closed session Monday night, the DeForest Village Board voted 4-0 to authorize Village Administrator Steve Fahlgren to negotiate a severance agreement with Police Chief Daniel Furseth.

The severance package comes after the chief was put on administrative leave after a YouTube video surfaced showing Furseth appearing to make racist comments about a group of black men.

Furseth had been on administrative leave since May 23, though the video was published in 2015.

Village President Judd Blau did not disclose the amount of the severance agreement, saying there is a range that would have to be agreed upon during negotiations between Furseth and Fahlgren.

Just four trustees were in attendance at the meeting. No comments were made following the meeting.

Blau said he “has no idea” whether Furseth will accept the severance agreement.

Prior to serving as police chief, Furseth was a lieutenant with the department.
