State authorities said Monday that a Madison Police Department officer was responsible for a State Street shooting that wounded another officer earlier this month.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, MPD officer Keith Brown fired his gun during an attempted arrest around 12:30 a.m. on Oct. 10. The round Brown fired inadvertently hit another officer. That officer was hospitalized and has since been released.
Another officer suffered a minor injury during the attempted arrest. No one else was injured in the incident.

DOJ officials said Katoine Richardson — the man police were trying to arrest at the time — was in possession of a loaded gun at the time but a criminal complaint filed against him makes no mention of Richardson firing his gun during the arrest.
According to the complaint, the incident started when an MPD officer spotted Richardson in the State Street area after his court-mandated curfew. When police tried making contact with Richardson near Mondays bar, he reportedly ran before getting into a struggle with an officer. The complaint alleges that Richardson had his hands on top of what was believed to be a pistol when he was finally brought to the ground.
When interviewed by police, Richardson allegedly told officers he knew he wasn’t supposed to have a gun because of a previous juvenile conviction and ran when he saw the officers because he feared going to prison for a long time once officers found it. He also allegedly said he would rather die than go to prison, so he tried to get officers to shoot and kill him.
After the shooting, Madison police issued a statement saying it was the first time in 20 years an officer had been shot in the line of duty.
Authorities with DOJ’s Division of Criminal Investigation said their investigation is ongoing.
