Edgewood College will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with DREAM Week, a series of educational and cultural events to commemorate the life and work of Dr. King.
DREAM Week: UNITY begins with an opening ceremony featuring a keynote address by Dr. Phyllis Esposito, director of the Center for Multicultural Education at Edgewood College.
Dr. Esposito is an experienced public school educator, and most recently served as a member of the faculty at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. Dr. Esposito holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Teaching from the University of Kansas.
The ceremony and keynote take place at Monday, Feb. 4, in Anderson Auditorium. Tickets are not required, and greater Madison is warmly invited.
Annually, Edgewood College celebrates the life, legacy, and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during DREAM Week, and closes on the third Monday of January in honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday. This institutional commitment to MLK’s legacy dates back to the ’60s when classes at Edgewood were suspended on April 9, 1968, the day of MLK’s funeral. The following weeks, the College canceled classes and hosted an all-day Teach-In titled “Crisis in America.”
Other 2019 DREAM Week: UNITY events include:
◆ Hosting students from Madison’s East High School for a special day on campus on Feb. 5.
◆ A screening followed by a discussion of the Spike Lee film “BlacKkKlansman” on Feb. 6.
◆ Black Professionals panel discussion presented by the Black Student Union at Edgewood College on Feb. 7.
◆ The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Banquet, recognizing students of color and student organizations at Edgewood College on Feb. 8.
