Convicted Balch Springs police officer Roy Oliver was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the murder of 15-year-old Jordan Edwards at the Frank Crowley Courts Building in Dallas Aug. 29.

Former Balch Springs, Texas officer Roy Oliver has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the murder of 15-year-old Jordan Edwards, a jury in Dallas County, Texas has decided.

The jury convicted Oliver of murder but did not find him guilty of the two lesser charges in the honor student’s untimely death. Jordan Edwards was an unarmed black teen who was a passenger in a car that had left a house party in April of 2017. Oliver fired multiple rounds of his patrol rifle into the vehicle carrying Edwards and a group of other kids as it drove past him.

One bullet reportedly struck the teen in the head, likely killing him instantly, a medical examiner stated.

Oliver said he “misspoke” when he originally claimed Edwards’ vehicle was moving aggressively toward the officers. Body camera footage would later show that the car was moving away from the police, instead of towards them.
