EXPO (EX-incarcerated People Organizing) of Wisconsin will host the third annual John Lewis Commemorative Community Cookout & Fair on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Olin Park Pavilion in Madison.
EXPO is a statewide organization led by formerly incarcerated people and dedicated to strengthening communities through civic engagement, leadership development, and systems change. The community cookout event was originally scheduled for July but was postponed because of unhealthy air quality.
The free, family-friendly event will honor the life and legacy of Congressman John Lewis, whose work for justice, equality, civic engagement and what he called “good trouble” continues to inspire communities across the country.
The annual gathering will bring together formerly incarcerated and directly impacted individuals, families, community organizations, advocates, elected officials, service providers, fair-chance employers and local entrepreneurs. The event will offer opportunities for community members to connect with resources, build relationships and learn about services and opportunities.
Wisconsin gubernatorial candidates have also been invited to attend the event, according to a press release from EXPO, providing community members with an opportunity to meet candidates, engage in conversation, and discuss issues affecting Wisconsin communities.
New this year, the event will feature a Resource & Community Fair with organizations providing information on employment, housing, health, education, reentry and other services. A Local Entrepreneur & Vendor Fair will also showcase justice-impacted entrepreneurs and small businesses.
