EXPO to host “People & Politics” event Thursday to connect community members with local leaders

EXPO (Ex-incarcerated People Organizing) of Wisconsin is inviting community members and local leaders to join “People & Politics,” a community gathering designed to bring candidates and community members together in a relaxed and respectful space to ask questions and engage in meaningful dialogue about the issues impacting our communities. The event will take place on Thursday, April 2, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Beb’s Beauty Supply inside East Towne Mall in Madison.

EXPO is a statewide organization led by formerly incarcerated people and dedicated to strengthening communities through civic engagement, leadership development, and systems change.

“People & Politics” is a space that creates an opportunity for community members to ask questions, share experiences, and engage directly with local leaders in a safe, welcoming environment.

“For many individuals EXPO serves, daily life often centers around maintaining stability, securing housing, meeting supervision requirements, maintaining employment, and staying connected to family. In this reality, civic engagement can feel distant or inaccessible,” EXPO said in a press release announcing the event. “‘People & Politics’ works to change that by creating a space where individuals can better understand how local systems operate, how decisions are made, and how their voices, and their votes, shape their communities.

“This event is about breaking down barriers between community and leadership,” the release continues. “It’s about listening, building trust, and making sure people who are directly impacted by policies have the opportunity to engage with those making decisions.”

Invited guests include Wisconsin Supreme Court candidates, Madison Common Council alders, and gubernatorial candidates, alongside community members and advocates, for an afternoon grounded in conversation and community.

This event is open to the public. Community members are encouraged to attend, bring their questions, and be part of a conversation.
