Gov. Tony Evers’ first budget will allow undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses and identification cards.

Evers released excerpts of his speech ahead of his 2019-2021 biennial budget address that he will give tonight at 7 p.m. in the Assembly Chambers of the Wisconsin State Capitol.

“We’re announcing tonight that undocumented folks will be eligible to receive driver’s licenses and ID cards,” the excerpt reads. “This makes our roads and our communities safer, and helps strengthen our economy and Wisconsin families.”

The move is certain to face opposition from Republicans who are in control of the state Legislature.
