Green Bay school board chooses former Madison East principal Mike Hernandez as superintendent

The Green Bay Area Public School District board of education has chosen former Madison East principal Mike Hernandez as its next superintendent.

The board voted 6-1 to offer the job to Hernandez at a special meeting Friday. Hernandez, the current assistant superintendent of secondary schools at the Appleton Area School District, is expected to formally take on the role on July 1.

“Of all the different experiences and roles that the various candidates brought to the role who participated in the process, the Board of Education felt that Mr. Hernandez will bring practical experiences improving school performance in school districts that share many of the same challenges as GBAPS,” GBAPS Board President James Lyerly said in a news release.

Before joining the Appleton school district in 2021, Hernandez served as chief of secondary schools in Madison for two years. That district administrative role followed an 11-year tenure as principal at Madison East.

Hernandez and the other finalist, Random Lake superintendent Michael Trimberger, took part in community listening and Q&A sessions on Wednesday.

Hernandez will replace Vicki Bayer, who announced in October that she intends to retire at the end of the school year. She was named interim superintendent in March 2024 following the abrupt resignation of Claude Tiller, who sparked controversy through remarks made on an Atlanta radio show that were seen as disparaging of school district staff.
