Hospitalizations rise as 3 new deaths and 145 new cases reported in Dane County

Public Health of Madison and Dane County reported 145 new coronavirus cases Tuesday morning, bringing the cumulative total to 29,268. The number of recovered cases is at 25,074 as active cases continue to drop to 4,091 or 14.0 percent of all cases.

This morning, Public Health of Madison and Dane County also reported an additional three deaths, bringing the county’s total deaths from COVID-19 to 106. The deaths are all white, one who is in their 90s and two in their 80s, and two who were women.

Today, the number of people currently hospitalized in Dane County — both Dane County residents and people from neighboring counties —  rose from 160 to 168. Patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in the ICU also rose from yesterday’s reported 40 to 48.

For Dane County residents, the number of people ever hospitalized for COVID-19 has increased by double digits this morning from 852 to 863. Of those 11 new hospitalizations, there are four additional reported hospitalizations for those in their 60s, three in their 80s, and one person in their 90s and one in their 30s. New hospitalizations also include one person who is Hispanic/Latinx.

The number of hospitalizations for residents in the county continues to impact adults 60 and older the most for the past few weeks. Madison365 has graphed that growth from information gathered daily from PHMDC’s data which reflects that the number of hospitalized cases in those in their 90s grew by 24.1 percent as adults in their  60s and 70s both grew by 15.8 percent, respectively.

Hospitalizations also continue to significantly impact our communities of color with those who are Asian has grown by 16.1 percent while those who are Black have grown 14 percent.  For those who identify as Hispanic/Latinx in our community have grown 8.7 percent since November 24.

The 145 new cases were attributed to yesterday and dates over the weekend. 38 of the 145 new cases were added to December 7 while 72 were added to December 6, increasing that day’s total to 169 and 9 added to December 4, increasing that day’s total to 249. The rest were added to dates late last week. The 7 day average of cases per day is now at 238.3 while the 14 day average is now at 245.6.

The percentage of the positive for these days also adjusted with December 7 reportedly at 2.4 while December 6 as increased to 7.3. For December 5, the percentage of positive has adjusted to 5.6 and December 4 has updated to 5.0. The 7 day average is now at 5.8 while the 14 day average as of December 7 is at 6.4.

Adults in their 20s and adults in their 50s both had the largest single-day growth today with 21 new cases or 27.22 percent of all new cases each. Adults in their 60s, 40s and 30s all followed closely behind with 20 new cases each and those 10-18 grew by 18. In single digit increases, children under 10 and adults in their 70s grew by eight, adults in their 90s by seven and adults in their 80s by two.

When looking at our communities of color, Black people in our community grew by 20 new cases and now make up 7.8 percent of all cases. Those who identify as Hispanic/Latinx have grown by 17 new cases and now make up 15.6 percent of all cases broken down by ethnicity. Asian people in our community grew by six new cases and make up 3.5 percent of cases.

Looking at growth over the past two weeks, infection in those in their 90s grew by 28.3 percent as adults in their 80s grew by 17.8 percent. Adults in their 70s grew by 17.5 percent and adults in their 60s by 15.3 since November 24.

In terms of case growth for the past two weeks for our communities of color, cases among Black people have grown by 15.5 percent while Asian people have grown by 13.6 percent. Those who identify as Hispanic/Latinx have grown 13.1 percent while American Indians in our community have grown by 10.3 percent during this same period.

UW reported yesterday two additional positives for students from on-campus testing, two from off-campus testing and 0 positive for employees from on-campus testing. All of these positive tests have been attributed to December 6. In total, there are 4,691 positive students and 467 positive employees  with a cumulative total of 5158 cases for UW since tracking began for campus. The 7 day average of cases is now at 19.0 for both students and staff in on and off campus testing as of December 5. The 7 day average for the percentage of positives for students is now at 1.4 for students and 0.9 for employees from on campus testing.
