Lewis Backs Ellison for DNC Chair
John Lewis (D-GA) receives the Presidential Medal of Freedom — the country's highest civilian honor — from former U.S. President Barack Obama.

Following a humbling defeat in November, all eyes are on the tightly-contested race to lead the national Democratic Party. Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress, picked up a key endorsement today, as civil rights icon John Lewis wrote a letter to DNC members urging them to support the Minnesota Congressman.

“Keith’s long history as an organizer who can energize the grassroots makes him the best choice to lead our party during this critical time,” Lewis said in a statement.

“He knows that sometimes you have to have good trouble. You have to get in the way and raise your voice. But protest must be channeled into electoral and legislative success,” he wrote. “Keith’s record standing with the grassroots means he is a trusted partner to harness this protest energy into rebuilding Democratic Party.”

Ellison was the first to jump into the race and garnered early support from party leaders like Chuck Shumer and key supporters like the labor union AFL-CIO.
Bernie Sanders, who some believe was denied the nomination by the DNC, also endorsed Ellison.
Vice President Joe Biden, meanwhile, backs former Labor Secretary Tom Perez.
The 447 members of the DNC will convene in late February to choose their leader.
