The Madison Common Council unanimously appointed Devine Nzegwu to fill the District 1 alder vacancy created by John Duncan’s resignation, effective July 31. Nzegwu will serve as interim alder until a new representative is elected in April 2027.
“I am truly grateful for the opportunity to serve District 1 and the City of Madison,” Nzegwu said. “I want residents to know that their questions, concerns, and perspectives matter and I look forward to creating meaningful ways to stay connected with the community.”
Nzegwu is a credit analyst at John Deere Financial and has held several community leadership roles, including president of Umu Igbo Unite Wisconsin and leadership positions with the Urban League of Greater Madison Young Professionals, according to a City of Madison press release. She also serves on the City of Madison’s Facilities, Programs, and Fees Subcommittee (Parks) and was named one of In Business magazine’s 40 Under 40 in 2024 for her professional and community leadership.
“I’m looking forward to working with Alder Nzegwu,” said Common Council President Sabrina Madison. “Her leadership experience will be an asset both to District 1 and the City overall.”
