Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes is one of six semifinalists to become Chicago’s next police superintendent, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Thursday.

Barnes name appeared alongside five other candidates as semifinalists, out of 53 applicants for Chicago’s top cop, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, who said that the five other semifinalists are all department veterans, although the Chicago newspaper mentioned that Barnes spent about a year as director of training and development for the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA).

Barnes started his position as Madison Police Chief in February of 2021.

The other five semifinalists are Counterterrorism Chief Larry Snelling; his now-retired predecessor, Ernest Cato III; Street Deputy Migdalia Bulnes; Constitutional Policing and Reform Chief Angel Novalez; and Labor Relations Cmdr. Donna Rowling.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability, a new civilian oversight body charged with leading the first-of-its-kind search, will select three finalists and submit those names to Mayor Brandon Johnson by July 14.
