Madison Reading Project will launch its sixth annual Community Book Drive on Nov. 10, aiming to raise $100,000 and collect 4,000 new books to support holiday giving and literacy programs.

The nonprofit plans to distribute more than 10,000 books to local children during the holiday season, including through year-end giving events and literacy programming in 2027.

“Our goal this year is to raise $100,000 and acquire 4,000 brand new books before winter break,” said Deirdre Steinmetz, co-executive director of programs and operations, in a press release.

Community members can purchase books through wish lists on the Madison Reading Project website or donate new books at collection sites throughout Dane County. Local bookstores, businesses, community organizations and employee groups are also organizing book drives and fundraisers.

The organization is partnering with the Empty Stocking Club, Madison School and Community Recreation, the Monona and Waunakee public libraries and other community groups to expand its reach.

“It is so important for children to have access to new books that reflect their unique identities as well as open their eyes to others’ lived experiences,” said Rowan Childs, co-executive director and founder of Madison Reading Project.

Books can also be purchased through participating booksellers, including Lake City Books, Mystery To Me, Books 4 School, Ink & Ivy, Garden Wall Bookshop, Ink Cap Books and A Room of One’s Own.
