A Madison teen has won the U.S Junior Chess Championship for the second year in a row.

Needing only a draw in the final round, 15-year-old Awonder Liang did just that against Akshat Chandra to win the US Junior Chess Championship at the Saint Louis Chess Club July 24. It was the second straight year that Awonder won.

In this prestigious annual chess tournament, junior players under the age of 21 compete for a chess prize fund of $20,600. The players receive 90 minutes for 40 chess moves, followed by 30 minutes to the end of the game, plus a 30-second increment starting from move one.

Awonder took home $6,000 for his championship and an invitation to compete in the 2019 U.S. Chess Championship.
