With Halloween fast approaching, NBC host Megyn Kelly wondered on an episode of her show Tuesday morning just what was so racist about dressing up in blackface on Halloween.

“But what is racist?” she asked on “Megyn Kelly Today.” “Because you do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface at Halloween or a black person who puts on whiteface for Halloween.

“Back when I was a kid, that was OK as long as you were dressing like a character,” she added.

It was part of a larger conversation (above) as Kelly’s guest panelists discussed the boundaries of racial sensitivity in wearing Halloween costumes. Those panelists included TV personality Melissa Rivers; Jacob Soboroff, a reporter for NBC News; and Jenna Bush Hager, former daughter of President George W. Bush.

“If you think it’s offensive, it probably is,” Rivers said.
