Michael Che has made history as the first person of color to become a head writer at Saturday Night Live.

On Dec. 12, NBC announced that Che and Colin Jost, the current co-hosts of the show’s Weekend Update segment, have been promoted to head writers, joining existing head writers Kent Sublette and Bryan Tucker. Che first joined SNL as a writer in 2013 when it came under fire for its lack of diversity.

Che has been named one of Rolling Stone’s “50 Funniest People,” Buzzfeed’s “50 Hottest Men in Comedy,” and Variety’s “Top 10 Comics To Watch.”

Che will be in Madison in February of next year for two nights at The Comedy Club on State Street.
