Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Mahlon Mitchell’s national profile continues to rise, as a Huffington Post headline this morning declares, “Democrats May Have Finally Found the Candidate to Take Down Scott Walker.”

The article in the left-leaning online magazine comes just over a week before the August 14 primary with polls showing state schools superintendent Tony Evers with a sizable lead over Mitchell and fellow contender Kelda Roys, but more than a third of likely voters still undecided.

Mitchell also got national attention a few weeks ago when he announced the endorsement of California senator and 2020 presidential contender Kamala Harris.

The Huffington Post article follows a stop in Superior, where few Democratic primary candidates tread. It acknowledges that Mitchell’s jokes sometimes don’t sit well with his staff or fellow politicians, but posits that his down-to-earth style might play well with voters statewide.

It also outlines his appeal as a labor leader and one of those on the front lines of the 2011 fight over Act 10. The article also focuses on his experience as a firefighter, quoting him as saying, “My job is to run into burning buildings. I’m not scared of any man.”
