The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA) will celebrate 125 years of free access to cutting-edge modern and contemporary art with a public reception on Thursday, June 4.

MMoCA began as the Madison Art Association when early supporters of the visual arts in  Madison first gathered in 1901.

“Since 1901, MMoCA has been a cornerstone of cultural and civic life in Madison,” says Paul Baker Prindle, MMoCA’s Gabriele Haberland Director, in a statement. “Providing free access to world-class art for 125 years is a landmark achievement. It stands as a testament to Madison’s enduring spirit and forward-thinking support.”

The 125th Anniversary Party and Spring Opening Celebration on June 4 will kick off at 5 p.m. with an exclusive preview for MMoCA members, followed by the public reception at 6 p.m.

The evening marks the debut of MMoCA’s latest exhibition, Extended Play: A-Side. As the first of a two-part series drawing from the Museum’s permanent collection, Extended Play: A-Side explores the emergence of a new form of abstract painting in the 1960s that utilized bold color and new relationships between control and freedom. The second part, Extended Play: B-Side, traces how that artwork is directly connected to the creative visionaries of Madison.

MMoCA members are invited to arrive early for exclusive access.
