The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) will host community input sessions for the second round of its boundary review as it continues planning for the city’s expected population growth over the next several decades.

The district is moving forward with its “Building for the Future” plan, which includes reviewing school attendance areas and district boundaries to help meet future educational needs in Madison. The review will examine current attendance areas, MMSD’s district boundary, potential attendance areas in developing neighborhoods near district-owned land, existing programs and options, and what families value most in their children’s educational experience.

This marks the second round of community input sessions following meetings held in April and May. The new sessions will present scenarios incorporating community feedback and give attendees additional opportunities to ask questions and share input as MMSD continues developing its plans.

“Building for the Future is about proactively planning and making thoughtful decisions that help MMSD remain a strong destination school district for all as our community grows and changes,” said Cindy Green, MMSD assistant superintendent of strategy and innovation. “We want families and community members to be part of that work. Their experiences and perspectives are essential as we consider how our schools can best serve students and families in the years ahead.”

The review will examine how attendance areas can support the five principles of the Building for the Future Plan. Principles include:

  • Balancing building capacity.
  • Promoting diverse student bodies and equitable access.
  • Prioritizing walkability and neighborhood-school cohesion.
  • Minimizing disruption to students and families.
  • And supporting access to specialized programming like dual language immersion, STEAM and special education.

A total of 11 sessions will be held at schools across the district, along with three virtual meetings via Zoom. The first will be held at Steamfitters Local 601, 6310 Town Center Dr., on Monaday, Sept. 28 starting at 5:30 p.m.

Registration is not required for in-person sessions, but is required for the three Zoom meetings. A full list of dates, times, and locations is available on MMSD’s website.
