The Madison Metropolitan School District announced that its new superintendent, Dr. Joe Gothard, will begin working at MMSD on Monday, May 20.
Dr. TJ McCray, deputy superintendent of MMSD, said in a press release Wednesday that Dr. Gothard will begin his “entry phase with MMSD” that week.
“During that time, and in close collaboration with Interim Superintendent Lisa Kvistad, Dr. Gothard will prioritize visiting schools and hearing about the shared experiences of district stakeholders, including parents, students, and community partners; building relationships and capacity across MMSD; and working with the Board of Education to establish priorities for the 2024/2025 school year,” McCray said.
Dr. Gothard is still actively leading the St. Paul Public Schools system, McCray added. Dr. Gothard was recently named the 2024 National Superintendent of the Year by AASA, The School Superintendents Association, which measures applicants’ leadership for learning, communication, professionalism, and community involvement.
His last day as superintendent of St. Paul Public Schools will be May 17.
Dr. Gothard will be in Madison during the week of April 7 to begin laying the groundwork for his upcoming move to MMSD. A press conference is planned for him on Thursday, April 11, details of which will follow soon.
