MIDDLETON, Wis. – Officers have shot the shooter who attacked people at a Middleton software company, injuring several, officials said. The shooter has died, officials said.

Middleton police Chief Chuck Foulke said the suspected WTS Paradigm shooter has died. Three other people are injured and being treated at hospitals.

Police have not yet released any details about the suspect or how the attack unfolded.

The Dane County Communications Center received multiple reports of an active shooter in the 1800 block of Deming Way beginning at 10:25 a.m.

Marlene Mecum, 48, was working at IMEG Corp. and heard two gunshots, she said. She and her coworkers sheltered in place, and when she finally left, she said she saw a pool of blood and one person put into an ambulance on Deming Way.

Middleton City Administrator Mike Davis said the situation in Middleton was considered stable at about 12:40 p.m. The city lifted a lockdown in the area just after 1 p.m., saying the investigation is ongoing and “there will be police activity in the area for a prolonged period of time.”

Two of the people being treated at UW Hospital were reported to be in serious condition and one was in critical condition, hospital officials said.

Dan Reeve, director of sales at Esker Software, said a shooting happened next door. All Esker employees were safe.

Investigators are interviewing witnesses at the Residence Inn in Middleton.

A brief lockdown at the Middleton High School, Kromrey Middle School and Clark Street Community School was lifted at about 12:15 p.m., a district spokesman told News 3. Multiple other area businesses, including the Greenway Station mall and child care facilities, were also briefly locked down Wednesday.

Foulk said another update is expected at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
