The Overture Community Advisory Council (CAC) and the Center for Black Excellence and Culture will host a free community conversation on the history, importance and impact of Black resistance in theater on Monday, Sept. 21, in Madison.

The event will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Center for Black Excellence and Culture on Madison’s South Side. The discussion will explore the role of Black resistance in theater, both on and off stage, and its significance within the arts community.

Dana Pellebon, a member of Overture’s CAC and director of performing arts for the Center for Black Excellence and Culture, will moderate the panel. Panelists will include Anthony Lamar Brown II, Kiah Calmese Walker, Baron Kelly and Overture Center Co-CEO and Chief People Officer Victor Patterson.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with the Center for Black Excellence and Culture on this event,” said Overture Center Director of Belonging, Culture and Impact Dr. Ida Balderrama-Trudell in a press release. “Having conversations and deeper dialogue about what is happening on and off stage is essential to our work at Overture Center and within the greater Madison community. We look forward to collaborating with our community partners to create a more inclusive environment in the arts.”

The event will begin with an informal welcome and light refreshments from 5:30 to 6 p.m., followed by a moderated panel and audience questions from 6 to 7 p.m.

Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to mingle, tour the Center for Black Excellence and Culture, and view artwork throughout the building.

The conversation is free and open to the public, but attendees are encouraged to RSVP online.
