The Opportunity

The Morgridge Institute for Research (MIR) seeks a research specialist to support research projects within the Metabolism research focus area. This position will be part of the Fan research group, which is a new research lab working on the quantitative understanding of mammalian cellular metabolism and metabolic regulation. Primary responsibilities will include:

* Qualitative and quantitative analyses of metabolites and other small molecules using HPLC- mass spectrometry-based metabolomics, including performing experiments, preparing samples, developing and applying appropriate LC-MS method to measure compounds of interest, and analysis of metabolomic data

* Perform mammalian tissue culture and other required experiments such as gene knockdown, extraction and analysis of protein and RNA, enzymatic assays

* Preparing research reports and assisting with writing of manuscripts and grant proposals

* Ordering, organizing, and maintaining lab equipment and supplies.

Candidate Requirements

Candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, analytical chemistry, molecular biology or related field. The ideal candidate will have direct experience with laboratory research, strong skills and training in mammalian cell culture and basic molecular biology, and a strong background in analytical chemistry. Experience in chromatography, mass spectrometry, and lab management is preferred. Candidates must have strong writing and communication skills, ability to work well with others, be highly responsible and organized, work both independently and within a dynamic research team and possess good analytical skills.

Systems Security Specialist

The Opportunity

The Systems Security Specialist is responsible for the operational security of the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery which is a multi-platform facility consisting of web, data, software and computational servers. The System Security Specialist will work closely with software, systems and network personnel to ensure the security, availability and continuous operation of the facility. This position will provision, configure and operate security management and monitoring systems including an independent facility access and video monitoring system and identity management and access system; ensure systems are configured as securely as possible without compromising usability and are kept up to date with the latest software releases and security patches; as well as work with networking personnel to implement and manage network-based security tools, including firewalls, intrusion detection systems and routing and access policies.

Qualifications

We are seeking candidates who have at least an associate’s degree in information technology security, computer engineering or computer science, or equivalent work experience. Ideal candidates will have prior experience with monitoring and ensuring security of computer systems. Knowledge of security processes and solutions for computing environments including networks, UNIX, Linux, Windows, Apple/Mac systems, virtual servers; storage, database and web servers is required. Demonstrated project management experience and knowledge of software assurance best practices and security processes and solutions for computing environments. Additionally, candidates must be able work in team based software development environments and communicate effectively with both customers and all levels of the organization. The following knowledge and skills are preferred:

* Knowledge of facility security systems including RFID-based access and video monitoring systems

Development and Marketing Specialist

Under the general direction of the Director of Development, the Development and Marketing Specialist participates in all fundraising activities including donor relations, direct mail appeals, marketing support, and events. This is a part time position with the potential to grow in the organization as skills and experience are developed.

Hours will be flexible; primarily during office hours (8:30AM to 5PM Monday-Thursday and 8:30AM to 1:00PM Friday), with some evening and weekend hours required, depending on event schedule.

Primary Responsibilities

Create and manage communications including: newsletters (print and email), invitations to events, annual appeal and other mailings
Maintain donor database; including generating thank you letters to donors in a timely manner and keeping up-to-date records

Job Duties:

  • Maintain contact with individuals and families to a degree sufficient to monitor and assist progress, typically at least one face-to-face contact per week.
  • Complete all consumer-related and program-related paperwork according to established timelines.
  • Complete and submit billing for all billable services.
  • Maintain a flexible schedule to accommodate program and consumer needs that may include evenings.
  • Assist in the development of program special events which provide opportunities for parent and family connection and growth.

Work Hours: Monday through Friday.  Some evenings may be required.
