Mark Anthony Morales, known to rap fans worldwide by his stage name Prince Markie Dee and a member of the pioneering ’80s hip-hop group The Fat Boys, died on Thursday. The group’s manager, Louis Gregory, confirmed the news.
The Fat Boys’ 1984 self-titled debut album was produced by rap legend Kurtis Blow and included the singles “Jail House Rap” and “Can You Feel It?”
A series of popular commercials for Swatch led to the trio also becoming film stars, first making a cameo in the classic film “Krush Groove” in 1985 before starring in the movie “Disorderlies” in 1987.
Morales embarked on a career as a producer in the ’90s collaborating with major singers like Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Marc Anthony, and Craig Mac.
“Forever in my Heart. Prince Markie Dee was more than a rapper; he was one of my very best and closest friends,” Gregory wrote on Twitter. “My heart breaks today because I lost a brother. I’ll always love you Mark and I’ll cherish everything you taught me. Tomorrow is your birthday, swing my way big bro.”
