With Madison Metropolitan School District extending its winter break by three days and pivoting to virtual learning for two more, the Progress Center for Black Women will open with volunteer educators to provide a safe space for children in grades 2 through 6 for those parents who aren’t able to stay home. The service will be free of charge.
Progress Center founder Sabrina Madison said the center could take up to 30 children while maintaining safe distance. Masks will be required.
The center, at 30 West Mifflin Street, Suite 702, will be open at 7 am each day this week. The building is secured and accessible only by passkey. For now, the space will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Madison suggests children bring a favorite game or toy with them.
On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, staff will have activities planned, understanding some level of routine is beneficial. On Thursday and Friday, support will be available for virtual school, including good wifi and extra laptops and other necessary devices.
Madison is also seeking volunteers, especially those with a background in education, as well as age-appropriate games to borrow.
Madison added that Progress Center staff often bring their children to work, so kids being around with center will be nothing new.
