Salvation Army of Dane County to cut staff, close community center

The Salvation Army of Dane County announced in a press release Wednesday that it would elimate eight of its 58 staff positions and wind down operations of its community center at the end of March in response to budget shortfalls.

The organization said it received additional grants and public funds during the COVID-19 pandemic, and much of that money has run out and cannot be renewed. Additionally, it opened an apartment complex called The Shield Apartments, with 11 of 44 units providing subsidized housing for low-income families. The service costs more than $150,000 per year to operate, according to the press release.

“We remain committed to being a source of hope and solution for this community, even as we navigate financial realities,” Area Coordinator Major Kristina Sjogren said in a statement. “As we exist to meet human needs in the Name of Jesus Christ without discrimination, sometimes extremely difficult decisions need to be made to make this a reality for so many that rely on our services.”

The organization estimates that the staff reduction will save more than $475,000 per year. One of the eight positions is currently occupied by a person who is retiring and will not be replaced.

“These decisions were not made lightly,” Area Coordinator Major Michael Sjogren said in a statement. “Personnel expenses make up a significant portion of our budget, and while this reduction is difficult, it is a necessary step to ensure we can continue providing essential services to those in our community.”

The community center has been open and serving the Darbo Worthington neighborhood for about 18 months after being shuttered for nearly three years during the COVID-19 pandemic. It will continue to serve current programs through March 28. A spokesman said it’s not clear whether or when it will reopen.

A spokesman said the Salvation Army of Dane County’s budget cuts are unrelated to nationwide federal funding freezes and cuts.
