With 78 percent of precincts reporting, former Alder Satya Rhodes-Conway had earned 62 percent of the vote, leading to projections that she will unseat longtime incumbent Paul Soglin to become Madison’s first openly gay mayor.
Rhodes-Conway, 47, is also only the second woman to win the office.
The result brings to an end Soglin’s third term as mayor; he served in the office as a young revolutionary in the 1960s and 70s, ran again in the 1980s and again in 2011.
Fitchburg will also get a new mayor as Aaron Richardson has defeated incumbent Jason Gonzalez.
