The Senate on Wednesday voted 66-34 to confirm Ohio Democratic Rep. Marcia Fudge as secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, adding another African American woman to the ranks of President Joe Biden’s Cabinet.

Fudge has served in the House of Representatives since 2008 and is the former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. Prior to being elected to Congress, she was mayor of Warrensville Heights, a suburb of Cleveland. She will be the second Black woman to lead the department and the first in decades. Patricia R. Harris under President Jimmy Carter was the first.

Vice President Kamala Harris will administer the oath of office and swear in Fudge during a virtual ceremony Wednesday night.
